Business Development

There is a distinction between business development and sales, though all may not agree [particularly "sales" people].

While both have the overriding objective of increasing sales, their roles should be quite different. The distinction can be become blurred and over the years we've seen jobs advertised as business development in order to attract a supposedly higher calibre of person to that of a "sales person", and equally the opposite also.

Business development would generally take a more strategic role to generating future business. Sales on the other had would be more focused on developing relationships with existing clients and new clients within the existing strategy. Sales peoplewould have a greater influence on day-to-day sales, while business development would be looking more to the future.

While the title may not always be of great importance [though obviously to some], it is important to recognise that there is a distincition between the functions of these roles. And while in smaller organisations both roles may be filled by the same person, there is a real need to manage the day to day sales while also focusing on business development strategy and activity.

So have you identified the distinct roles of "sales" versus "business development" in your organisation? Have you developed your sales pipeline and do you accurately forecast your future sales?

We're passionate about sales and business development. A highly focused sales and development team with clear distinctions between the two can have a profound impact on a business sales performance and growth strategy.
